LOGISTICS
LOGISTICS (the word) is a French word from ancient Greek (logistic). Logistics refers to the way resources are acquired, stored and then transported to their ultimate destination, in a cost-effective way.
The term Logistics was initially used mostly as a military term and referred to how a military force obtained, stored and transported equipment and supplies. The term soon transferred to the corporate sector and is used by manufacturers to refer to how resources are handled and transported through the supply chain.
IMPORTANT FACTS:
Logistics is the overall process of how commodities are acquired, stored and transported.
Often poor control of logistics will have a negative impact on a business’s profitability.
Basically, the objective of logistics is to have the correct amount of resources at the correct time and then getting the goods to the consumer, safely and in good condition, in a cost-effective manner. The goal of good logistics is to get the goods to the consumer quickly and safely without damage. As mentioned above the term logistics was originally a military term but has transferred over to the business sector.
